Robot Battery

How does a robot find its' own power? I'm referring to house vacuum cleaner types that after sensing low battery power - move towards and connects to a power socket. Would it have to go to an actual power socket, or could you use induction charging, similar to that used by some electric toothbrushes? The house is quite a hostile place for a robot. Consider the obstructions, the owners predisposal to moving furniture on a day to day basis and the world to a robot can suddenlt become hostile. I guess that if you really wanted to tackle this problem then you should look at some form of socket recognition system. Perhaps using a sticky label with some computer recognisable data on it stuck to the socket. I suppose that you could have a dedicated vacuum cleaner socket, but again, this could be obstructed and your VC would die a slow lingering death as it vainly tried to find power, just inches from it's grasp, blocked by the owners copy of Vogue! Considered solar trickle charging? What are the power requirements? Good project though. sounds like fun. L

Robotic Lawn Mowers Work!

These little battery operated machines take care of your yard? Yes, and they do an excellent job! When we first put in our robotic lawn mower everyone came from near and far to tell us why it would not work. Even our neighbors would come and throw sticks and leaves in front of our mower to see if it would chop them up. For two years now our robot has been out taking care of our yard. Making sure all the weeds are chopped down and our grass is perfect every day.

Now our neighbors no longer question whether this little battery operated machine can take care of our yard. Just a few weeks ago our next door neighbor installed one in his yard. Now he can go out and tend to his garden during the cool of the morning and retreat to the a/c during the heat of the afternoon and read instead of having to push that mower around.

Every morning or every other morning our mower comes out from the docking station and starts the search for tall grass. Once it finds that tall grass it makes a tight circle and slowly starts to make larger and larger cicles, cutting down all the high grass in the area. After clearing the tall grass it starts the search and destroy mission again. Once its' battery life is drained, or it believes it has finished taking care of the yard, the mower returns to the charging station on its own to prepare for the next day's adventure.
